Ministry for the Environment

1279-01-RFI - Exploring automated methods for land cover mapping

This Request for Information (RFI) seeks information that will help the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) to understand more about the remote sensing market and the current methods available that could be employed to map the land covers represented in the Land Cover Database (LCDB).

LCDB is a timeseries of national maps of New Zealand’s land cover. As it is the only national database of land cover, it is widely used by government agencies, regional councils, and researchers. However, the method by which it is produced is largely unchanged from the first version. Both stakeholders of the LCDB and the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment have highlighted that changes need to be made to the LCDB to better inform the many areas of environmental monitoring and decision-making it is used for.
