The Vine Creek Cleanout project in Kowhitirangi is focused on addressing the ongoing aggradation of the creek bed caused by significant sediment deposition from the catchment. This build-up has filled the channel, reducing flow capacity and increasing the risk of erosion. The work aims to restore the creek’s functionality, improve flood resilience, and stabilise adjacent banks. As the project crosses private farmland, coordination with landowners will be key to minimising disruption and ensuring the site is left tidy and ready for re-grassing where needed.
The work involves setting up the site with temporary access, traffic management, and environmental controls. Depending on tender submissions, the scope will include excavating either 13,000m³ or up to 23,000m³ of material, with channel dimensions adjusted to meet these targets. The true right bank will be reshaped and stabilised, focusing on widening the corner and fixing low spots, while localised repairs will be carried out on the true left bank to address scour. The creek bed will be reformed to improve flow and manage erosion. The project also includes pre- and post-surveys, as-built drawings, and full site supervision to meet the required specifications.
