3434-22/23 Waipara River Willow Removal Project

This project involves the removal of pre-treated willow and other exotic trees from a 10.6km stretch of the Waipara river and Weka creek between the mouth and about 1.6km above the SH1 bridge.
The aim of the project is to restore a more natural braiding pattern for the Waipara river and Weka creek. This will reduce flood and erosion risk and improve habitat for native flora and fauna.
Access to some parts of the site will be challenging. minimising river crossings and sediment discharge is a priority. Working from both sides of the river and on islands will be required.
The trees will be aerially sprayed in February, and removal of trees will start 6 weeks later. A firm start date will be supplied by the Environment Canterbury Contract Manger in February. The trees to be removed will standing and defoliated.
It is important that we work co-operatively with adjoining landowners, especially regarding access.
We are the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury). We work alongside partners and other agencies to protect and enhance the health of our environment to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for all of us. We also manage rivers across Canterbury to protect communities from flooding and erosion. This work is part of a region-wide restoration project which aims to improve natural braid character and native biodiversity in our braided rivers.
