Xylella is a pathogenic bacterium which can infect a range of plant species. Xylella is not currently present in New Zealand. However, its vector, the meadow spittle bug (Philaenus spumarius), a primary source and vehicle of Xylella infection, is in New Zealand.
MPI requires new data and knowledge on native plant preferences and seasonality of the meadow spittle bug in potential high-risk areas in New Zealand, and the efficacy of insecticides registered in New Zealand to control this insect vector. The project will help define optimal control measures for meadow spittle bug in New Zealand and inform readiness preparations for an effective response in the event of an incursion of Xylella.
This is a rescoped RFP following an Open RFP in October 2024 which did not result in a contract.
