Lakes District Health Board

Advance Notice - Enabling Civil Works Mental Health Building Construction

Lakes District Health Board are proposing to construct a new Mental Health Facility within the grounds of Rotorua Hospital - southwest of the main hospital between Pukeroa and Rangiuru Streets. The proposed works will include demoltion/removal of several existing buildings and the construction of a new purpose built facility. The works will include establishment of paths, roading, landscaping and trenching for utilities.

The building platform area involved in the earthworks/ground disturbance is approx. 5988m3. This includes the recommended 1-2m ground improvement extending past the building footprint being; 70.9m long x 38.3m wide at Southern and 27.4m wide at Northern ends. A shallow foundation solution is proposed due to soil typology and geothermal nature of the site. The ground improvement scheme (subject to results from additional detailed testing work currently in play) currently proposes to excavate within above extents and to a depth of 2m, and that this is replaced with a geomatrix fill, gas control membrane and a continuous 150mm concrete foundation pad. The habitable space is then framed up off the foundation pad to allow for any ground emitted heat and gas (H2S/CO2) to naturally vent across/along the subfloor of the building footprint.

Lakes DHB intends to issue RFP for enabling earth works mid January 2022.
