The Dunedin City Council (DCC) is exploring opportunities to implement advanced traffic counting technologies. A key goal is to procure a cost-effective and deployable system capable of robust traffic counts, including vehicle classification and speed readings even on low-speed limit roads. This information will be crucial for understanding traffic patterns, identifying congestion points, developing business cases, and designing future transport projects. We are conducting market research to find out about products that provide robust traffic counting data and potentially support wider management of the transport network.
We need a system that can be easily deployed to collect traffic count data including vehicle classifications and Speed. The data gathered must be reliable, accurate and belong to DCC. The data must be retained in a way that complies with relevant privacy obligations, and it should be possible to anonymise any information gathered.
Our current contract expires 30 June 2026 and the market research through this advance notice will help shape our tender requirements for early 2026. Refer to the attached for contact details if you think you have Traffic Counting Technology that can deliver value for money for the DCC.
