Contract 2706 Peel Forest Closed Landfill Remediation

Timaru District Council (TDC) owns the Peel Forest Closed Landfill, located at the eastern end of Dennistoun Road, Peel Forest, next to the Rangitata River. Multiple flood events in the Rangitata River between 2019 and 2023 caused erosion of the terrace toe, resulted in landfill waste becoming exposed, with some waste falling onto the riverbed below.

TDC is now seeking to remediate Peel Forest Closed Landfill. Remediation will involve excavation of historical landfill material and other impacted material, transfer to appropriate and licensed disposal facilities, and reinstatement of the finished site.

TDC is looking for respondents who have known experience, expertise, and a good track-record as a head contractor undertaking work with contaminated material. Remediation of the landfill has the potential for serious environmental and health and safety risks if appropriate mitigations are not applied. TDC places high importance on both Health and Safety and Environmental issues and serious scrutiny of the information regarding experience, track record and proposed methodologies supplied by respondents will be undertaken.

This is an opportunity to participate in the process of excavating and removing landfill waste, to prevent further and potentially significant impacts to the Rangitata River and associated users and ecosystems.
