Large High Voltage Batteries Second Life and Disposal

This is a Request for Information (RFI) for the End-of-Life Management of Electric Bus Batteries.

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is seeking insights into supplier capabilities, technical solutions, and innovative approaches for the safe, sustainable, and economically viable management of high-voltage electric bus batteries nearing end-of-life.

The purpose of this RFI is to enhance our understanding of available technologies, international trends, and industry best practices for battery disposal, recycling, and second-life applications. We are particularly interested in practical solutions that align with environmental standards and regulatory requirements, as well as business models that clarify ownership, risk-sharing, and partnership opportunities.

Responses to this RFI will help inform GWRC’s strategy for managing electric bus batteries in a way that delivers long-term public and environmental value for the Wellington region.
