In August 2024, the Government announced a Four-Point Action Plan to tackle maths and pāngarau achievement in response to declining student achievement.
In October 2024 the Ministry appointed suppliers to provide maths resources to year 0-8 students. Initially, these resources were seen as a pragmatic short-term two-year solution and was designed to be supplementary supports as schools implemented the refreshed Maths curriculum. In March 2025, the Minister of Education announced that “maths resources will be Ministry-funded (free for schools) every year.”
As a result of this announcement the Ministry will be expanding the supply of Ministry-funded maths resources for 2027 and beyond, the Ministry will be releasing an open RFP shortly for the provision of the resources as a supplementary support for schools, as they implement the refreshed Maths curriculum.
