Health NZ operates a large-scale, federated digital environment comprising hospitals, primary and community health providers, and national, regional and local data centres. Interconnectivity between these sites is currently supported by a range of legacy network circuits, delivered under locally and regionally contracted service arrangements.
Our current network infrastructure faces challenges in capacity and has a large technical debt component, preventing it from scaling effectively to meet increasing traffic demands. These factors have contributed to performance inconsistencies and highlight the need for targeted investment to simplify, enhance, and modernise the network.
While the above outlines some of the changes, Health NZ is also experiencing a growing pipeline of new connectivity demands. Many of these are driven by clinical and operational initiatives, each requiring reliable and secure network capability. In response to this growing demand, Health NZ is developing a Future Connectivity Pipeline, which will be demand-driven and funded incrementally.
