Porirua City Council

Porirua City Cemetery Expansion

Porirua City currently manages three public cemeteries: the Pāuatahanui Burial Ground, and the Porirua and Whenua Tapu Cemeteries.
Both the Pāuatahanui Burial Ground and Porirua Cemetery are closed aside from second interments and pre-purchased family plots. Whenua Tapu Cemetery was opened in 1975 and the Crematorium in 1981. It is currently the only open cemetery in the City.

Whenua Tapu is forecast to run out of space for in ground interments by 2035. With further capital works this could be extended to 2045 but not beyond. Interment capacity beyond 2045 requires additional land.

Integral to the 50-year Project Plan is the acquisition of 10-16 hectares of additional cemetery land in Porirua.

Acquisition of the land is likely to be undertaken under the Public Works Act 1981 (PWA).To meet the rigours of the PWA a careful City-wide site selection review is an essential pre-requisite.

The site selection review needs to be undertaken by a suitable multi-disciplinary consultancy. The purpose of this procurement is to source a suitable consultancy who have the experience and capacity to carry out a thorough and comprehensive site selection review and provide recommendations.
