Block 6 at Discovery School has had a long term issue with moisture ingress relating to the two conservatory extensions which had built up gardens formed about them.
Both the finished ground levels and gardens covered the bottom edge of the cladding resulting in consistently high moisture levels that have damaged the exterior cladding, wall framing and internal linings.
This project will demolish one conservatory and part of the second, gardens and built up ground will be removed down to achieve appropriate clearances.
Damaged cladding and framing will be replaced and windows fitted to the openings where the conservatories have been removed.
The cladding is confirmed to be asbestos for which an asbestos demolition and removals plan is required.
Raised gardens have similarly been formed along sections of Blocks 2, 4 and 5, the removal of these are included in the works.
Due to the presence of asbestos, the project is proposed to start within a school holiday period. The work can continue as a single phase with work to be managed during term time.
