SCI2600151 - Modelling the Effects of Gravel Extraction from Canterbury Rivers on Coastal Stability and Erosion

Environment Canterbury (Canterbury Regional Council (CRC)) invites proposals to undertake a modelling-based study examining the effects of gravel extraction from Canterbury rivers on rates of sediment transportation under multiple scenarios; considering how they compare with ‘no-extraction’ rates and analysing the potential effects on coastal stability and erosion. The study will quantify sediment delivery from extraction reaches to the coast, the role that extraction location plays, and assess implications for coastal sediment budgets.
The project will address critical knowledge gaps identified in recent technical syntheses, particularly concerning bedload transport, river–coast connectivity, and the contribution of river-derived sediment to coastal systems.
