The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has a requirement for RNZAF and RNZN personnel in operational units to be trained in the use of self-defence in order to defend themselves or others against hostile acts. This training is known as Critical Incident Management (CIM) Training and includes various techniques such as handcuffing, ground combat and various holds in order to calmly and safely diffuse situations.
