The Invercargill City Council and Distinction Hotels agreed to make changes to the Wachner Place area which would allow bus access through Wachner Place to the new hotel. Wachner Place and the Clock Tower which was built in 1989 as open public area. Council has agreed that the clock is to be relocated approximately 20m to the east and the foundations piles have been installed.
The Clock mechanism and old structures were removed and the bus accessway constructed by Distinction in 2025. The clock time mechanism has been restored and along with the bells and clock faces (and associated fittings) are now required to be reinstalled in a new Clock Tower in the new location in Wachner Place.
The structural support system and foundations for the clock and its components are to be provided by Distinction as part of an existing development agreement.
The relocation and installation of all clock components including the mechanism, bells and clock face as well as the façade system of the tower is the responsibility of ICC.
This ROI relates to the design and build (D&B) of the façade which creates the housing for the clock components. ICC will appoint directly a contractor to install and commission the clock components, and the D&B Contractor will need to co-ordinate with during design and installation.
